The Old Market Comes to Life
"Ve'ahavta" – you shall love, is the name of Tarbut's new and exciting project in Afula. The name derives from the Torah; In Exodus chapter 19 is written "Thou shall love thy neighbor as yourself". "There is no other commandment greater than this", says Rabbi Akiva. This project lives up to its name!
What is "Ve'ahavta"?
Tarbut identified the old marketplace in the center of Afula as a target for renovation and has been working with the local merchants and municipality to bring life back to this deserted part of the city. Once a bustling center, the old marketplace had fallen on hard times, with people drawn to the more modern, newer shopping centers that have been popping up all over Afula. An opportunity crystallized. Tarbut has worked with local artists, local merchants and the local municipality to open a storefront in the market, a gallery, and have begun to transform the walls of the marketplace with gorgeous street art that echoes of the Wynnewood area of Miami. Tarbut's next step is to work with the area merchants to create a thriving "shuk" (marketplace) that will become a destination — filled with shops, galleries and cafes.
